Chanel N°5 est un parfum créé en 1921 par Ernest Beaux pour la couturière Coco Chanel qui désirait un parfum épuré en accord avec sa mode : « Un parfum artificiel, je dis bien artificiel comme une robe, c’est-à-dire fabriqué. Je suis un artisan de la couture. Je ne veux pas de parfum à odeur de rose, de muguet, je veux qu’il soit composé ». Il s’agit peut être aujourd’hui du parfum le plus connu au monde.

Coco Chanel rencontra Ernest Beaux lors d’un séjour sur la Côte d’Azur. Le N°5 fut la cinquième proposition choisie parmi deux séries de flacons numérotés. Il s’agit d’un bouquet floral et intemporel et son succès tient à l’utilisation à haute dose d’aldéhydes. Ce sont des composés synthétiques à la vague odeur d’orange et de poudre, mais qui à l’époque n’étaient pas utilisés par les parfumeurs malgré la puissance et l’amplitude qu’ils peuvent apporter aux parfums.
